Umgeni Retail Group reports 4.1% like-for-like sales growth

The grocer said volumes held up over the winter trading period despite pressure on household budgets.

Umgeni Retail Group reported like-for-like sales growth of 4.1% for the 20 weeks to mid-July, according to a trading update issued on Monday.

The company said selling price inflation across its basket averaged 3.2% over the period, implying modest volume growth. Umgeni Retail Group said its lower-priced private label range grew ahead of the group average.

According to the update, the group opened 11 stores during the period and closed two. It said it expects to open a further 18 stores in the second half.
