Privacy Policy

Business News South Africa (“we”, “us”) publishes South African business news at businessnewssouthafrica.co.za. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why, and what rights you have over it under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

The newsletter and subscriber information

If you sign up to our newsletter, we collect your name, email address, job title, industry, and optionally your business name. We ask for these specifically, rather than just an email address, because we intend to build a smaller, more useful list of readers who actually work in South African business, and to be able to tell advertisers and partners something real about who reads this publication.

That information is used, at minimum, to send you the newsletter itself. Separately, our signup form carries its own checkbox asking whether you would also like to receive relevant offers and communications from our vetted sponsors and partners. That checkbox is off by default, is not required to subscribe to the newsletter, and only your details are shared with a partner if you have ticked it. We do not sell subscriber data to anyone, and we do not share it with a partner without that specific, separate consent.

You can withdraw either form of consent at any time: unsubscribe from the newsletter using the link in any email we send, or contact us to have your partner-sharing consent withdrawn or your details removed entirely.

Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to ask us what personal information we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, to have it deleted, and to object to how it is used. To exercise any of these rights, contact us. If you believe we have not handled your information properly, you may also lodge a complaint with South Africa’s Information Regulator.

We keep subscriber information for as long as you remain subscribed, and delete it on request or after an extended period of inactivity.

Visitors, analytics and cookies

When you read the site we record standard technical information: your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view and how you arrived. We use Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager, installed through Google Site Kit, to count visits and understand which stories are read. They set cookies in your browser. Our cookie policy lists them and explains how to switch them off. We do not use this data to identify you personally, and we do not sell it.

Our hosting provider and content delivery network also process requests to the site, and keep security and access logs, in order to serve pages and protect the site from abuse.

If you choose “Continue with Google” when subscribing, Google tells us your name and email address so we can fill in the form; we do not receive your Google password.

Embedded content from other websites

Some articles embed content from other sites, such as videos. That content behaves as if you had visited the other site, and it may collect data about you and set its own cookies.

Who we share data with

We use third-party services to run this site and send communications: our hosting provider, our email/newsletter delivery service, and, only where you have opted in via the partner-sharing checkbox described above, vetted sponsors and partners. We do not otherwise share, sell or rent personal information to third parties.

How long we keep your data

Subscriber details are kept for as long as you stay subscribed, and are deleted on request or after an extended period of inactivity. Analytics data is kept in Google Analytics for the retention period set on our account (currently the default), and server logs are kept by our host for a short period for security.

What rights you have over your data

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to erase it, other than information we must keep for legal or security reasons. Requests go to the person responsible for personal information at Business News South Africa through our contact page.
