South Africa’s biggest companies by market value, ranked

South Africa’s biggest companies by market value, ranked

South Africa’s biggest companies by market value are led by miners and banks. On 29 September 2026, CompaniesMarketCap’s ranking put AngloGold Ashanti first at $46.92 billion, ahead of Naspers at $33.17 billion and Gold Fields at $31.34 billion.

Market value, or market capitalisation, is the share price multiplied by the number of shares in issue. It moves every trading day, so this is a snapshot, not a permanent order.

What the ranking shows

Gold is doing much of the work. Three gold miners sit in the top nine, and gold is R67,942 an ounce on the latest Reserve Bank figure, up about 10% in dollars over a year. When the metal moves, these share prices move with it.

The three banks that follow, Capitec, FirstRand and Standard Bank, are within about $1.6 billion of each other, between $29.58 billion and $31.14 billion, so their order can swap on any day. We compared them on other measures in our ranking of the big banks, where each leads on something different. MTN and Vodacom, the two biggest mobile networks, are compared on subscribers in our telecoms ranking.

How to read it

  • The source uses US tickers for some of them. AngloGold Ashanti, Gold Fields, Harmony and Sasol appear with their US tickers, and Naspers with its US depositary receipt. All also trade on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and the source counts them as South African. AngloGold Ashanti moved its main listing to New York in 2023.
  • Companies run from abroad are left out. Prosus, Richemont, BHP, Anglo American and Glencore trade on the JSE but are headquartered elsewhere, so they are not South African companies here.
  • Value is not size of business. A company can have a high value and modest profit, or the reverse. Market value tells you what investors are paying, not what a company earns.

How we ranked this

We used one source for every row, so the figures are consistent with each other, and we show the date. Other sites publish different orders, mostly because they take prices at different times or count a company’s listing differently. If you spot a company missing or a wrong figure, tell us through our contact page and we will check it. This is general information, not investment advice.
