Start with what you have

The best first business uses money, skills and contacts you already have. Answer honestly: the matches are only as good as the answers.

South African context

Township and small-town markets are often under-served: the same idea that is crowded in Sandton can be wide open 20 kilometres away.

How to find and test a business idea in South Africa

Most new businesses do not fail because the idea was bad. They fail because nobody checked, before the money was spent, whether enough customers would pay a price that covers the costs. This tool does that check in about five minutes, using the same questions a funder or an experienced mentor would ask.

Find an idea

Tell it your budget, skills, area and how much time you have. It ranks 40 business ideas that work in South Africa, from lunch delivery and spaza shops to solar installation and bookkeeping, and shows the licences, starting budget and first steps for each.

Test your idea

Scores your idea out of 100 across nine areas, works out how many sales a month you need to break even and how long it takes to earn back your start-up money, then turns your weakest areas into a 30-day plan.

How the viability score works

  • Proof of demand (15): have real people paid, or only said they would?
  • Profitability (15): your margin, and whether expected sales clear break-even.
  • Problem strength (12): how often and how badly customers feel the problem.
  • Competition and edge (13): how crowded it is, and why anyone would switch to you.
  • Customer clarity (10): can you name exactly who buys first?
  • Start-up money (10): what you need against what you actually have.
  • Founder fit (10): your experience in this kind of business.
  • Speed and repeat sales (8): how soon money comes in, and whether it comes back.
  • SA operating risk (7): load shedding, security, licences and imported stock.

A score is a starting point for a decision, not a guarantee. Treat anything under 60 as a list of things to test before you spend.
