TikTok One in South Africa: how creators get paid by brands, and what to check before you say yes

TikTok One in South Africa is now open to creators, and it is the clearest sign yet that the platform wants local brands paying local creators directly. This guide covers what TikTok One is, the three ways it pays, who qualifies, and what to check before you accept an offer. It is written for creators at any size, including those with a few hundred followers.

What TikTok One is

TikTok One is TikTok’s marketplace for brand and creator work. After a phased regional rollout it reached South Africa in late September 2026, with local brands and creators already onboarded, according to HYPE Magazine and TechFinancials. It sits inside TikTok Studio, the tool creators already use to run their accounts.

“South Africa has an incredible creator community, and TikTok One gives them a direct pathway to work with local and global brands,” said Zethu Mthethwa, head of sales for TikTok in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The three ways TikTok One pays

Spark Opportunity (also called Content Suite). You authorise a brand to promote a video you have already posted as a Spark Ad, and you are compensated when the ad runs. You need at least 500 followers and must sign up for TikTok One in the app. It is the lowest barrier of the three, because you do not have to make anything new.

Creative Challenge (Creator Content At Scale). A brand publishes a brief, you make a video to it, and you are paid based on the video’s performance and the media investment behind it. You need at least 1,000 followers and a TikTok One sign-up.

Creator Led Package. You work with an approved creator marketing agency, which invites creators individually according to what each campaign needs. No follower minimum has been published for this route. Inbound SA notes that participation in any of the three remains subject to each campaign’s requirements and the needs of the brands taking part.

What has not been published

The launch coverage does not say how much brands pay, how and when creators are paid, or how tax is handled. Until you see rates, dates and terms in the app, in a brief or in a contract, treat any number you hear as unconfirmed. A follower minimum is a condition for being eligible, not a promise that brands will pick you.

How it fits with TikTok’s other income routes

TikTok says LIVE Gifts, Subscription and Work with Artists remain available alongside TikTok One. Its Creator Rewards Programme is narrower: Shopstar’s payout guide lists 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the past 30 days and original videos of at least a minute as requirements, says it runs only in eligible countries, and reports that the older Creator Fund was never available in South Africa. For most local creators, that makes brand work the realistic route, which is what TikTok One is built around.

What TikTok says about growth, and what it does not

TikTok reports that between June 2025 and May 2026 the number of creators receiving rewards through TikTok One grew by 90% globally, that creators with 50,000 or more followers saw the value of their monthly rewards rise 40% year on year, and that participation in brand collaborations more than doubled. These are worldwide figures supplied by TikTok. They are not South African earnings, and they say nothing about what a creator with 1,000 followers will make.

Five checks before you accept an offer

  • Know how long the brand can use your video. For a Spark Ad, ask how long it can run and whether it runs under your handle. You own the copyright in what you film unless you assign it in writing, so the licence terms matter. See our guide to influencer contracts, rates and invoicing.
  • Label it properly. Content you make for a brand, or in return for free products, must be marked as advertising. Our guide to the ARB disclosure rules shows where and how.
  • Record every rand and every freebie. SARS treats all of it as income. Read what SARS counts as income and how provisional tax works before your first payment arrives.
  • Check the claims in the brief. If a brief asks you to say something about a product that you cannot back up, push back or decline.
  • Get the payment terms in writing. The fee, the payment date and what triggers payment. If a payment runs late, our late payment toolkit sets out the interest and the letter of demand.

Who should start now

If you already have a library of videos and at least 500 followers, Spark Opportunity costs you nothing to explore, and it is the quickest way to find out whether brands want your content. If you are building towards brand work as a business, read when to register a company early, so your structure is ready when the invoices start.
