Owner Marco Casciani says the new 11,000m² RACE! centre in Sandton is the physical expression of a philosophy that began in a garden shed in 1996, that every detail, from the tools on the bench to the way a vehicle is stored, matters.

According to Casciani, the 11,000m² site on the corner of Grayston Drive and 145 Katherine Street houses a state-of-the-art workshop capable of everything from routine servicing to full-scale aerodynamic and performance builds on supercars and hypercars, the ultra-expensive, ultra-fast vehicles that sit at the top of the automotive market.

The workshop is complemented by a design studio for vehicle wraps, paint-protection film and bespoke visual treatments, as well as a luxury concierge and storage service. That service includes 24/7 monitoring, facial-recognition entry points and oversight by specialised technicians, meaning owners can leave multi-million-rand cars on the premises with the same confidence they would have in a bank vault.

Beyond the garage

RACE! is not trying to be just a garage. The Sandton complex also hosts Ducati Johannesburg, the continent’s flagship Ducati dealership, a luxury watch boutique called Luxury Time, the contemporary art space Scapegoat Gallery, a design arm called RACE! SPACES that creates bespoke garages and man-caves, the fashion retailer Love Maison 33 and an Italian-forward café, CORSA Café. In Casciani’s words, the centre is “part workshop, part showroom, part dealership, part design house, part gallery, part lifestyle destination.”

For South African entrepreneurs, the launch signals that the high-end automotive aftermarket is moving beyond a pure service model. By bundling performance engineering with retail, hospitality and storage, RACE! is creating a one-stop destination for owners of rare and expensive vehicles, a model that could be replicated in other niche luxury sectors, from high-performance yachts to bespoke jewellery.

The facility also leans on long-standing relationships with global performance brands such as BRABUS, NOVITEC, TECHART, MANSORY and VOSSEN. Those partnerships, built over years of delivering work that meets the standards of the brands themselves, give RACE! the credibility to claim it can meet international expectations while operating from South Africa.

Industry observers note that the South African luxury automotive market is small but resilient, with a handful of affluent clients willing to spend millions on customisation despite broader economic headwinds. The new hub could therefore attract a higher share of that spend, keeping more of the value chain local rather than sending vehicles abroad for work.

While the scale of the project is impressive, Casciani is quick to point out that it does not represent a sudden arrival. “It is the next stage of a journey that has been developing for decades,” he says, underscoring that the investment is the culmination of years of expertise, European training and a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship.

For small-to-medium enterprises watching the launch, the key takeaway is the importance of aligning brand reputation with physical infrastructure. RACE! has turned a reputation for precision engineering into a tangible space that reinforces that reputation, offering customers a visual and experiential proof point that a workshop is more than a garage, it is a curated environment for luxury assets.

The South African automotive sector has traditionally been dominated by volume manufacturers and a network of service centres focused on mass-market vehicles. In that context, a facility that dedicates an entire footprint to the most exclusive segment stands out as a strategic deviation. The typical process for high-performance modifications involves a series of approvals, quality checks and compliance steps that are overseen by both the vehicle manufacturer and local authorities. By establishing a dedicated space that meets those rigorous standards, RACE! reduces the need for owners to ship their cars overseas, thereby shortening lead times and preserving the integrity of the vehicle throughout the modification journey.

Regulatory compliance in the aftermarket is anchored in a framework that requires adherence to safety, emissions and environmental standards. Workshops that specialise in aerodynamic alterations and engine tuning must demonstrate that their work does not compromise road-worthiness. The presence of recognised performance brands within RACE! provides an additional layer of assurance, as those brands bring their own testing protocols and certification processes. This alignment with established standards helps to mitigate risk for both the workshop and the vehicle owner.

Security is another pillar of the business model. High-value automobiles are attractive targets for theft and vandalism, and the insurance industry often imposes strict conditions on storage facilities. The integration of 24/7 monitoring, facial-recognition entry and specialist oversight directly addresses those insurance requirements, allowing owners to obtain favourable coverage terms. In practice, this means that the cost of storage is offset by reduced premiums and the peace of mind that comes from knowing the vehicle is under constant professional supervision.

From a financial perspective, the consolidation of multiple services under one roof creates operational efficiencies. Shared utilities, centralised staffing and a unified brand experience reduce overheads that would otherwise be duplicated across separate locations. For a business owner, this translates into a more predictable cost structure and the ability to leverage cross-selling opportunities. A client who arrives for a performance upgrade may also be introduced to a bespoke paint-protection film, a custom-designed garage, or even a luxury watch, thereby increasing the average transaction value.

The inclusion of a design studio reflects a broader trend in the luxury market where visual identity is as important as mechanical performance. Vehicle wraps and protective films have become a language of personal expression, allowing owners to differentiate their cars without altering the underlying structure. By offering these services in-house, RACE! ensures that the aesthetic work is coordinated with the engineering work, eliminating the risk of misalignment that can occur when multiple vendors are involved.

Hospitality elements such as the CORSA Café and the Scapegoat Gallery serve a dual purpose. They create a welcoming environment for clients who may spend several hours at the facility, and they reinforce the perception of the centre as a lifestyle destination rather than a purely transactional space. This approach mirrors the concept of “experience-driven retail” that has gained traction in other luxury sectors, where the ambience and ancillary services contribute to brand loyalty.

For South African business owners contemplating similar ventures, the RACE! model illustrates the importance of ecosystem thinking. Rather than focusing solely on a single service line, the centre demonstrates how complementary offerings can be woven together to create a compelling value proposition. The success of such a model depends on three core elements: deep expertise in the core product, strategic partnerships that bring credibility, and an infrastructure that supports both operational excellence and customer experience.

Another dimension worth noting is talent development. High-performance engineering requires a workforce that is trained to exacting standards, often with exposure to international best practices. By attracting technicians who have trained abroad or who have worked with the global performance brands, RACE! contributes to the upskilling of the local labour market. This knowledge transfer has a ripple effect, raising the overall capability of the South African automotive aftermarket.

In addition, the centre’s location in Sandton, a district known for its concentration of financial services and affluent consumers, provides strategic access to the target demographic. Proximity to corporate headquarters and high-net-worth individuals reduces the friction of travel and encourages spontaneous visits. The choice of a high-visibility corner also serves as a branding tool, turning the building itself into a landmark that signals the presence of a premium service offering.

From a macroeconomic standpoint, projects of this scale contribute to the diversification of the South African economy. While the country’s traditional export strengths lie in commodities and manufacturing, the growth of niche luxury services adds a new dimension to the service sector. This diversification can enhance resilience against external shocks and create high-value employment opportunities.

Finally, the launch of RACE! underscores the evolving expectations of luxury consumers in South Africa. Modern buyers seek more than just a product; they demand an integrated experience that aligns with their lifestyle aspirations. By delivering a seamless blend of engineering, design, security and hospitality, the centre meets those expectations and sets a benchmark for future developments in the high-end automotive space.

In summary, the RACE! centre represents a convergence of specialised engineering, strategic partnership, premium customer service and thoughtful design. Its existence signals a maturation of the South African luxury automotive aftermarket, offering a template that other entrepreneurs can adapt to their own niche markets. As the industry continues to evolve, the emphasis on holistic experiences, regulatory compliance and talent development will remain central to sustained success.
