Understanding VAT Registration in South Africa
Value-Added Tax (VAT) is an indirect tax charged on most goods and services in South Africa. As your business grows, knowing exactly when you cross the SARS registration line — and pricing your products to include VAT correctly — keeps you compliant and protects your margins.
Below R50,000
You cannot register for VAT. You do not charge VAT and cannot claim input VAT on your purchases.
R50,000 – R1,000,000
Voluntary registration. Once you have exceeded R50,000 in the past 12 months you may choose to register — useful for claiming input VAT and appearing established to larger clients.
Above R1,000,000
Compulsory registration. You must register within 21 business days of the month in which your taxable supplies exceeded R1 million (or will reasonably exceed it under contract).
Key SARS facts for 2025/2026
- Rate: The standard VAT rate remains 15%. A proposed increase for 2025 was scrapped, so 15% still applies.
- Compulsory threshold: R1 million in taxable supplies over any consecutive 12-month period.
- Voluntary threshold: R50,000 in the past 12 months lets you register early.
- Deadline: Register within 21 business days once you pass R1 million to avoid penalties and interest.
- Filing: Most vendors file VAT201 returns every two months via SARS eFiling.
