TikTok One has launched in South Africa, giving local creators a formal way to be paid by brands inside the app. TikTok has announced the launch after a phased rollout across the region, with local brands and creators already onboarded, HYPE Magazine reported. The offer has three routes and two published follower minimums. What it does not yet have is a published price.
The three routes
Spark Opportunity, also called Content Suite, lets a creator authorise a brand to promote a video they have already posted as a Spark Ad. The creator is compensated when the ad runs. It requires at least 500 followers and a TikTok One sign-up in the app.
Creative Challenge, or Creator Content At Scale, has creators make videos to a brand’s brief. They are paid on the video’s performance and on the media investment behind it. It requires at least 1,000 followers and a sign-up.
Creator Led Package is run through approved creator marketing agencies, which invite creators individually according to what a campaign needs. Inbound SA notes that participation in each route stays subject to the requirements of each campaign and the needs of the brands taking part.
“South Africa has an incredible creator community, and TikTok One gives them a direct pathway to work with local and global brands.”
Zethu Mthethwa, head of sales, TikTok Sub-Saharan Africa
What TikTok says about the model
TikTok says that between June 2025 and May 2026 the number of creators receiving rewards through TikTok One grew by 90% worldwide. It says creators with 50,000 or more followers saw the value of their monthly rewards rise 40% year on year, and that participation in brand collaborations more than doubled, TechFinancials reported. These are global figures. They do not say what South African creators will earn, and TikTok has not published South African numbers.
TikTok One sits inside TikTok Studio, and the company says LIVE Gifts, Subscription and Work with Artists remain available to creators alongside it.
What has not been said
None of the launch coverage says how much brands pay, how and when creators are paid, or how tax is treated. That matters, because SARS has said that whether influencers are paid in cash, products, services or travel, it is all income and must be taxed. Payments through TikTok One will need to go on the same records as any other brand income. Our guide to influencer tax in South Africa explains how.
The other established income routes are narrower than they look. Shopstar’s payout guide reports that TikTok’s Creator Rewards Programme requires 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the past 30 days, and runs only in eligible countries, and that the older Creator Fund was never available in South Africa. If that is right, brand work is the main platform-supported route for most local creators, which makes TikTok One’s terms important.
What creators should do now
- Read the terms in the app before authorising a Spark Ad: how long the brand can run your video, and whether it runs under your handle.
- Label paid and gifted content. The Advertising Regulatory Board expects it. See how to label a sponsored post.
- Put the deal in writing for anything beyond a standard platform offer. See what belongs in an influencer contract.
- Keep records of every payment, and think about whether it is time to register a company.

A fourth route, and the rest of the toolkit
Bizcommunity, covering the same launch, names a fourth TikTok One model alongside the three above: Creator Marketing, where a creator makes custom content for a brand for a fee, agreed directly rather than tied to a video’s ad performance. The same coverage bundles in a discovery tool called Branded Buzz, which surfaces creator content brands have worked with in a dedicated feed so it keeps getting found after a campaign ends.
TikTok One sits inside a wider set of ways a South African creator can earn on the platform, per Bizcommunity: Live Gifts convert into Diamonds a creator can cash out, subject to TikTok’s regional policies; a Live Subscription lets a creator build recurring income from its most engaged viewers rather than one-off Gifts; Video Gifts let eligible viewers tip a qualifying video directly, provided the creator has at least 10,000 followers, an account at least 30 days old and a public video posted in the last 30 days; and Effect Creator Rewards pays out when a TikTok effect a creator built in Effect House is used in other people’s videos, a route open to South Africa and aimed less at people in front of the camera than at anyone who can design an AR effect.
